How much should a small business website actually cost in Australia?
It's the first question almost every business owner asks, and the hardest one to get a straight answer to: what should a website actually cost? Search around and you'll find $50 offshore gigs, $15,000 agency quotes, and everything in between — all for something that, on the surface, looks like the same thing. So let's cut through it honestly.
Here's the short version: for most Australian small businesses, a genuinely good website lands somewhere between $500 and $3,000, depending on size and complexity. But the price tag matters far less than what's actually included — and that's where most people get burned. Let's break it down.
What actually drives the price
A website quote isn't pulled from thin air. The number moves based on a handful of real factors:
- Number of pages. A tidy one-page site for a sole trader is a very different job to a 15-page site with service pages, a blog and location pages.
- Custom design vs template. A design built around your brand costs more than a recoloured template — but it's the difference between looking like everyone else and looking like you.
- Functionality. A simple brochure site is cheaper than one with online booking, e-commerce, a customer login, or automation wired in.
- SEO foundations. Whether the site is built to actually get found on Google — proper meta, schema, speed, a sitemap — or just built to exist.
- Ongoing support. Whether you're left on your own after launch, or someone keeps it updated, secure and climbing.
The three price tiers (and the trap in each)
The cheap end — under $300
Offshore marketplaces and DIY builders. Genuinely fine if you just need something online and have time to fight with it yourself. The trap: these sites are usually slow, templated, invisible on Google, and a nightmare to change later. You often pay twice — once for the cheap version, then again to have it done properly.
The middle — $500 to $3,000
Where most small businesses should land. A professional, fast, mobile-first site built around your brand, with real SEO foundations so it actually gets found. This is the sweet spot: proper quality without agency overheads. The trap here is variety — two quotes at $899 can be wildly different in what's included, so read carefully.
The premium end — $5,000+
Larger agencies, complex builds, e-commerce, custom systems. Sometimes genuinely warranted. Often, though, you're paying for the agency's office and account managers, not extra value in your actual website. A small business rarely needs to be here.
What a fair quote should include
Price aside, a quote worth taking should cover all of this — if it doesn't, ask why:
- Mobile-first, fast-loading design (most of your visitors are on a phone)
- Per-page SEO meta, schema markup and a sitemap so Google can find and rank you
- Google Business Profile and analytics set up from day one
- Your own domain and hosting sorted, not locked to the developer
- Clear ownership — you own your site and content, full stop
- What happens after launch: updates, security, support
The real question isn't "how cheap can I get a website" — it's "what's the cheapest way to get a website that actually brings me work." Those are very different numbers.
The "no upfront payment" model — what it actually means
Most web designers ask for 50% up front, sight unseen. We do it backwards: we build your site first, you see the finished thing, and you only pay once you're happy with it. No deposit, no risk.
Why? Because if we're confident in the work, you shouldn't have to gamble on it. It also keeps us honest — we don't get paid unless we've actually delivered something you love. It's the same reason we don't lock anyone into monthly retainers: our pricing is flat and annual, and you can walk any time. Good work should keep clients, not contracts.
Red flags when comparing quotes
- Vague inclusions. If a quote doesn't spell out pages, SEO and ownership, you don't know what you're buying.
- Locked-in hosting or domains. If leaving means losing your site, that's a leash, not a service.
- No SEO at all. A site that can't be found on Google is a very expensive business card.
- Big upfront deposits with no guarantee. You're carrying all the risk.
- Monthly retainers with no exit. Ongoing support is good; being trapped isn't.
So — what do we charge?
Straight answer: our website packages start at $499, with a Growth option at $899 and Premium builds from $2,500 — all built before you pay, with SEO foundations included, and flat annual care plans (no monthly retainers) if you want us to keep it climbing after launch.
Not sure what your business actually needs, or whether your current site is holding you back? Start with a SEO Snapshot ($147 + GST) — we'll show you exactly where you stand and what it'd take to fix it, credited back if you come on board. Or just have a look at what we do. And if you're a tradie, we've got a page specifically on SEO for tradies.
Whatever you decide — even if it's not with us — go in knowing what a fair website should cost and include. That alone will save you from the traps at both ends.
